OPEN OR CLOSED?
Choosing the right impression technique
Both techniques transfer the implant position to the model – they differ in handling.

Open tray impression (pick-up)
  • Custom or stock tray with a window
  • Loosen the guide screw through the window before removal
  • Coping stays in the impression – no repositioning
  • Recommended for multiple or divergent implants
Closed tray impression (transfer)
  • Closed stock tray – no window required
  • Coping stays in the mouth when removing the tray
  • Unscrew the coping and reposition it in the impression
  • Ideal for single teeth and limited mouth opening

PRACTICAL TIP: SELECTION
  • Impression coping diameter = healing abutment diameter – for a matching emergence profile
  • Short copings where space is limited, e.g. in the molar region
  • Long copings for thick gingiva or a deep implant shoulder
PRACTICAL TIP: SEATING
  • Check correct seating before taking the impression, with an X-ray if required
  • For the open technique, check the window position in the tray beforehand
  • Send the matching lab analog to the laboratory

Note: Selection and use depend on the individual clinical situation and Cowellmedi's current instructions for use.
